Creativity and New Media

New media platforms such as Instagram offer experiences that foster communities of creativity. Users personalize and tailor their profiles to their liking as they begin to build their brand. This platform allows individuals to share photos, videos, and even stories. I recently started using Instagram stories as a way to document my travels and to express my creativity. I have been able to produce my own content using boomerangs and editing tools. It has been really fun to get creative with captions and add hashtags, filters, stickers, or locations to my photos or videos. Instagram introduced a new feature in which you can showcase your saved stories on your profile and I customized my profile with all the countries I traveled to earlier this January. I picked stories from my trip to Asia and created highlights of my trip for each country I visited. In one example I included below, I documented my time in Taiwan and used a combination of photos, videos, and boomerangs, while also utiliz

Creativity

New media platforms foster creativity by providing different ways in which we can express our ideas, while also exposing us to the thoughts and opinions of others. A NY Times article talks about how Disney helped foster creativity among its users by tolerating YouTube videos that turned their characters into rap stars. Various individuals decided to take clips from animated movies and TV shows to create mash-ups of the song "Crank That." A version taken from "SpongeBob SquarePants" started gaining in popularity and Nickelodeon, the owner of the children's show, encouraged their audience to continue creating more mash videos using their original content. This example shows how social media not only helped foster their imagination, but also allowed users to connect through these iconic characters. Nickelodeon and Disney helped create a community in which individuals can feel inspired as well as inspire others. "Disney Tolerates a Rap Parody of Its Critters.

Modeling Reality with Virtual Worlds

Virtual worlds are an interactive, avatar based space in which multiple users can engage in reality simulated activities and they are typically geared towards entertainment and educational purposes. While it seems as though this form of technology is used most by millennials for their gaming needs, the article "Avatar II: The Hospital," discusses how virtual technology could improve medical training in the healthcare industry. There are facilities that utilize chaotic virtual stimulations to help better prepare professionals for real life emergencies, helping to improve the nurses' sense of judgment and molded their abilities to effectively work under pressure. While virtual technology could potentially help more industries grow, utilizing this outlet may become costly and time consuming to build. While virtual worlds are used mostly for entertainment experiences and the demand isn't very high, I believe that industries who are willing to invest more into the develo

Twitter

After creating a Twitter account and posting my first tweet, I have noticed many differences between a Twitter discussion and blackboard discussion. Twitter limits the number of characters allowed in a tweet to ensure that posts and responses are short and to the point. Its also a more informal form of communication and if made public, can be viewed by anyone. On the other hand, Blackboard discussions provide unlimited space to share your thoughts and is only open to your class and professor. However, I believe that face-to-face discussions are the most efficient way for a class to really share their ideas or opinions.

Social Networking

Some ways that corporations use social networking is to promote and advertise their products or services. Social networking allows people to connect from all around the world for easy and instant communication and is a great opportunity for business owners. For instance, Dave Klonke, CEO of Right Hook Branded Merchandise uses social media as a way to display his company's capabilities and show the breadth of what they can do. He uses Instagram to help promote new projects, Facebook as a storytelling platform and LinkedIn to generate leads. Through this technology, Dave is able to share real time news and share it with a larger audience. Despite all the benefits of social networking, there is also a "dark side" that we must also take into account. Platforms such as Facebook have utilized this technology as a way for users to instantly communicate with others, but there have been some serious issues regarding privacy. We have found increasing concerns on the loss of priva
