Social Networking
Some ways that corporations use social networking is to promote and advertise their products or services. Social networking allows people to connect from all around the world for easy and instant communication and is a great opportunity for business owners. For instance, Dave Klonke, CEO of Right Hook Branded Merchandise uses social media as a way to display his company's capabilities and show the breadth of what they can do. He uses Instagram to help promote new projects, Facebook as a storytelling platform and LinkedIn to generate leads. Through this technology, Dave is able to share real time news and share it with a larger audience.
Despite all the benefits of social networking, there is also a "dark side" that we must also take into account. Platforms such as Facebook have utilized this technology as a way for users to instantly communicate with others, but there have been some serious issues regarding privacy. We have found increasing concerns on the loss of privacy that comes with using social networking. Facebook, for instance, has been facing some negative consequences for not protecting the personal information of its users. According to a study conducted by Danah Boyd and Eszter Hargittai, “Our data show that far from being nonchalant and unconcerned about privacy matters, the majority of young adult users of Facebook are engaged with managing their privacy settings on the site at least to some extent." Privacy is becoming a huge issue and corporations need to be very careful with the information they share using these technologies. If they're not careful, it can do more harm than good.
