Blog v Wiki
Blogs and wikis are platforms of social software designed to facilitate personal interactions over computer networks. Blogs are a website where a single owner can post journal like entries. Only the author or administrators of the blog may create new posts and make changes, but all viewers can comment. They are displayed in reverse chronological order and some examples of blogs include online diaries, travel lows, and news columns. A wiki is a set of web pages comprising of content that can be edited by multiple users. The content is usually written collaboratively by a group to inform about a specific topic and the most well-known example of a wiki is the Wikipedia free online encyclopedia. Users of wikis may add or remove any content of their choice, which can override another person's contribution. Both blogs and wikis can be private, open only to a specific group, or made publicly available and may include pictures, videos, links, or audio clips.
One way blogs can be used for collaboration is in the classroom. Bloggers are able to create and share interesting ideas that others may comment or respond to. Elmore, a professor from Harvard describes blogs as "uniquely authentic, driven by personal interests and connected to classroom realities." Not only does it foster students to push their own thinking, but their own ideas are also being challenged by others. Blogs and wikis can be viewed as a source of continual learning, encouraging digital collaboration. Another use of wikis could be to incorporate them into the workplace allowing all employees to stay informed about important topics.
